Research in Structural and Functional Peculiarities of Germanic, Romance, Slavonic and Lithuanian Languages. Doc. Dr. A. JanulienÄ. 2010ā2015.
The teachers of the Department, the researchers of this field, deal with the issues of English language teaching/learning, especially, English for specific purposes, cognitive linguistics, sociolinguistics and lexicography.
Dr. Lina BikelienÄ analyses connector usage in native and non-native learnersā English writing. Her thesis was designed to analyse, compare and contrast connector usage in Lithuanian learnersā argumentative essays and essays in the target language, i.e. the English language of native speakers. The comparison with groups of students studying English as a foreign language (EFL) with different mother-tongue background was also made. The results permit conclusions to be drawn about the Lithuanian EFL characteristics of overt marking of semantic relations with connectors, the relationship with other EFL linguistic groups in connector usage, the existence of a universal model of reasoning, reasons that might have led to the results and the ways in which EFL language could be brought closer to the target language. This work therefore will find practical application for improving academic writing courses by specifically designing them for Lithuanian EFL students.
Doc. dr. Julija Korostenskajaās focus of research is phrasal verbs in English. She analyses their ontological semantic acquisition, presents some methodological and practical considerations on the issue. The researcher uses the theory of ontological semantics to propose methodological and practical solutions for the acquisition process of selected phrasal verbs. Another field of Dr. J. Korostenskajaās activity is translation of Academic texts from English and into English.
Dr. Liudmila ArcimaviÄienÄ researches the field of cognitive linguistics, specifically, the use of metaphors in political discourse. Based on the analysis of metaphors in the UK, USA and Lithuanian news media texts she makes an attempt to reconstruct and compare models of wellbeing in Baltic countries as well as analyse descriptions of relations between the USA and Russia.
Lect. RÅ«ta SirvydÄ analyses expression of anger and fear in English and Lithuanian based on English and Lithuanian corpus. While exploring the origin of anger and fear metonymies as well as their productivity the author makes an attempt to reveal different aspects of national character. The results of linguistic research are supplemented by the latest data from the field of psychology and neurology.
Assist. Jelena Kirejeva also takes particular interest in the issues that fall within the scope of cognitive linguistics, discourse analysis and conversational analysis, trying to focus on the Politeness Theory and its application in the analysis of contemporary drama.

The scientists of the department conduct research in the traditions of literatures and cultures, and their relationship with the Lithuanian language and culture and apply the survey data to the development of the studentsā intercultural competences.
Dr. Linara BartkuvienÄ's research field is Virginia Woolf's ouevre, its place and influence on the literary and philosophical context of the early 20th century England.
The research conceptualizes the issue of reality in Woolf's short stories and novels, defines and analyzes semantic relations between Woolf's writing and Bertrand Russell's analytical philosophy.
Another filed of research is the theme of madness in English literature: the research is structured around the analysis of the forms of insanity, how form represents madness, and how madness is often used as a metaphor within literature.

The teaching staff of the institute analyse the developmental issues of professional and general competences, apply research results to the teaching practice. This research trend also encompasses the department teachersā insights into foreign language teaching methods, learnersā assessment and self-assessment, innovative approaches and new technologies, psychological-pedagogical teaching-learning aspects.
Doc. dr. AuÅ”ra JanulienÄ is conducting her research trying to find new effective ways to help our students with the development of their linguistic competence. She has also been investigating several cases of bilingualism with the aim to find out what kind of language learning strategies are applied and how they are practised by multilingual parents in order to develop their childrenās multiple language acquisition. Doc. dr. Julija Korostenskaja has been trying to build taxonomy of EAP (English for Academic purposes) activities in a Lithuanian classroom. The results of her research may be used as a stimulus for reflection or a resource for other colleagues to optimize and maximize student involvement in class. Dr. AudronÄ Riley is also interested in different aspects of learning and teaching EAP and ESP (English for Specific Purposes). She has been currently analysing effective strategies of reading ESP texts and their application.
The subjects of doctoral student lect. Simona KontrimienÄās research are also university students. She analyses spirituality of academic youth, investigates its conceptualisations, spread and strategies for self-education. In her research she carries out in-depth analysis of spirituality, its diverse conceptualisations and spirituality-related constructs such as spiritual intelligence, ego integrity and differentiation of self; parallel topics of her research include educational determinants of spirituality, such as childhood parenting styles, and strategies for spiritual self-education.
EU funded projects
The lecturers of the department doc. Dr. A. JanulienÄ, L. KazanaviÄiÅ«tÄ, assist. R. ValiukienÄ participate in the project Development of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Education (2011ā2013) funded by the European Structural Funds and Ministry of Education and Science under the āHuman Development Action Programmeā, Agreement No. VP1-2.2-Å MM-05-K-02-011. The goal of the project is to introduce subject teachers of the basic and secondary schools of Lithuania to the application of content and foreign language integrated learning approach. The idea of CLIL contributes to the development of the key competences necessary for the knowledge-based society members; it shapes the participantsāattitudes towards innovative and creative subject teaching, encourages them to make the study process active via the application of practical teaching methods.

One of the research trends of the department is the analysis of structural and functional characteristics of the Germanic and Lithuanian languages. The doctoral student Lina InÄiuraitÄ investigates the morphemic structure and formation of nominal words with neoclassical elements in the standard Lithuanian language by the application of synchronic linguistic analysis. The theme of her dissertation is The Morpheme Structure and Formation of Nominal Words with Neoclassical Elements in the Standard Lithuanian Language. The aim of the study is to investigate and describe the morpheme structure and formation of nominal words with neoclassical elements in the standard Lithuanian language.
The other research trend carried out by the members of the Department falls into the area of applied linguistics (sociolinguistics, the research of functional properties of English as the lingua franca; sociolinguistics problems of the English language (national, social, cultural identity) in the context of the practical teaching of foreign languages in the European framework, discourse analysis of scientific texts). The doctoral student Dalia PinkeviÄienÄ exploresthe area ofsociolinguistics with a focus on the linguistic diversity and the new terminology of polylingualism, translanguaging and metrolingualism. The preliminary title of her doctoral thesis Metrolingualism in Lithuania will consider recent developments in sociolinguistics and the emergence of terms such as polylingualism, translanguaging and metrolingualism while treating linguistic diversity as the norm rather than an exception, and interpreting linguistic repertoires as sets of multimodal resources that speakers draw on.
In 2012, the majority of the Department teachers related their research to the English language teaching and developing studentsā linguistic skills for professional purposes. The Department lecturers A. TreÄiokaitÄ, L. InÄiuraitÄ, L. NorvilienÄ compiled a number of teaching aids for the University students.
The teaching aid Build up Your Medical Vocabulary compiled by lect. Albina TreÄiokaitÄ is meant for the students of medicine study programme. The designed tasks and tests of the teaching aid are intended for students of medicine who are starting to learn their professional (medical) English.
The teaching aid English for Students of Natural Science designed by lecturer Lina InÄiuraitÄ is dedicated to the students of Natural sciences, especially those who study biology and ecology. The teaching aid is divided into seven units: biodiversity, climate change, ecosystem, nuclear power, photosynthesis, pollution and rainforests.
The other teaching aid compiled by the lecturer Lina InÄiuraitÄ is entitled English for Students of Biology: an Introduction to Vertebrate World. It is meant for the second year students studying biology. The teaching aid is divided into five units: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. It contains a wide array of texts and scientific articles to provide a variety of enjoyable and engaging topics in biology.
The teaching aid Medical English File (MEF)compiled by the lecturer Leonora NorvilienÄ is dedicated to the students of the Faculty of Medicine studying medicine, public health, nursing and other medical areas to practice their English language skills. Medical English File is designed within the format of IELTS and the level of difficulty of English is C1 in accordance with the Common European Framework for Language. Medical English File consists of ten chapters covering key topics in the field of medicine (human anatomy, surgery, first aid, obstetrics, pediatrics, drug addiction, etc).

The research in the field of linguistic didactics (the didactics of foreign languages, the testing and evaluation of language competences, the compilation of standardized tests, integrated teaching of a foreign language, the quality problems of the final examination tests of foreign languages, training of prospective foreign language teachers, the perspectives of the (professional, general, individual, cross-cultural, etc.) development of personal competences while learning foreign languages) is carried out by several members of the department.
In 2012 the lecturer of the department Loreta ChodzkienÄ defended her PhD thesis EU Pedagogueās Intercultural Communicative Competence and Its Developmental Socio-educational Factors. Her research focuses on the mobility participantsā intercultural communicative competence which is not only a means of communication but also a tool of mutual understanding within the internationalisation process in EHEA. L. ChodzkienÄ highlighted EU teacher trainersāand student teachersā attitudes towards mobility which is considered to be a key means to master oneās intercultural communicative competence. She has also observed EU teachersā from eight EU Teacher training institutions ICC manifestation tendencies in the socio-cultural context of Lithuania.
In 2012 L. ChodzkienÄ disseminated her research ideas while participating in the International Symposium on Language and Communication: Research Trends and Challenges at Ege University in Izmir, Turkey, and delivering the presentation under the title of Multilingualism in Erasmus mobility programmes from the Studentsā point of view. She also participated at the international conference in Tartu University Learning and Teaching Languages in a Multi-Cultural Spacetime where discussed the issues of mastering teachersā intercultural communicative competence while teaching languages for specific purposes.
The contribution to the research into intercultural communicative competence is made by another researcher of the Department doc. dr. Roma KriauÄiÅ«nienÄ who investigates foreign language teachersā viewpoints on the development of learnersā intercultural competence in the process of foreign language teaching/learning. She is also interested in researching into educational prerequisites of the development of studentsā value attitudes and integration of values into study programmes of contemporary universities as well as the investigation of foreign language teachersā approach to instrumental and terminal values and their approach to the development of values in the lessons of the English language.
Doc. dr. Roma KriauÄiÅ«nienÄ disseminated her research data at variuos conferences of international and national levels. At the 9th international conference Learning Languages: Problems and Perspectives at Liepaja University shetogether with R. Å iugždinienÄ she delivered the plenary presentation entitled Foreign Language Teachersā Viewpoints of Intercultural Competence Development in FL Teaching / Learning Process.
Doc. dr. R. KriauÄiÅ«nienÄ discussed the problematic issue of finding ways how to integrate the development of value attitudes into study programmes of contemporary universities at the 1st International Symposium on Language and Communication: Research Trends and Challenges at Ege University in Izmir, Turkey.

This trend of research of the institute is supported by the investigations carried out by doc. dr. Vita BanionytÄ. The scientistās research object is German for Specific Purposes, its syntactic and other structures. V. BanionytÄās other research interest is the development of communicative linguistic and general competences, their assessment related to the descriptors of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The results of her research were published in the article āThe importance of general competences while learning foreign languagesā.
Lecturer, doctoral student Dalius JarmalaviÄius studies the words of Germanic origin derivation in the first manuscripts of bilingual dictionaries of the Baltic languages. In 2012 he arranged a database comprising 5532 Germanic noun compounds from the German-Lithuanian dictionary manuscript compiled by J. Brodovskij in the 18th century. Further to it, the researcher analyses the theory of diachronic word derivation in later German language epochs, such as the epoch of early General German or Modern German.

Doc. Dr. Dalia BukauskaitÄās focus of research is the Austrian writerās Hugo von Hofmannsthalās pieces of creation. In 2012 the researcher together with the other co-authors prepared, edited and published the 40th Volume of Critical Essays (āSƤmtliche Werke: Kritische Ausgabeā). This particular work comprises a catalogue of Hugo von Hofmannsthalās private library. The publication displays all Hofmannsthalās hand-written records (markings, abstracts, jottings), it also comprises all the dedications to the writer and his family members and comments on the records. The latter demonstrates an evident correlation between the commentaries and his literary pieces. A particular attention is paid to the writerās words, objective comments, and explanations of some particular persons, quotation and source references.

Doc. Dr. Virginija JÅ«ratÄ PukeviÄiÅ«tÄ has been carrying out research in the field of Education science and analysing the state of schoolchildrenās and university studentsā learning to learn competence, dealing with its development possibilities while teaching and learning foreign languages. Learning to learn competence, as a constituent part of generic competences, plays an important role in the development process of young learners.
Doc. Dr. V. PukeviÄÅ«tÄās articles are based on her research results. The article entitled āSchoolchildrenās and studentsā attitude towards the memory strategies in their foreign language learningā deals with the learnersā attitude towards memory strategies that they use to learn a foreign language. In her other articles the researcher emphasizes the significance of the development of learnersā learning to learn competence while implementing life-long learning goals and proves the importance of understanding the constituent parts of the target competence and interconnectedness of each constituent. Having explored the current EU and Lithunian documents doc. Dr. V. PukeviÄiÅ«tÄ marks the importance of creating not only a safe, comfortable but also modern learning environment that is equipped with a variety of learning facilities.
The lecturer D. JarmalaviÄius and doc. dr. Virginija PukeviÄiÅ«tÄ participate in the project Development of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Education (2011ā2013) funded by the European Structural Funds and Ministry of Education and Science under the āHuman Development Action Programmeā, Agreement No. VP1-2.2-Å MM-05-K-02-011. The goal of the project is to introduce subject teachers of the basic and secondary schools of Lithuania to the application of content and foreign language integrated learning approach. The idea of CLIL contributes to the development of the key competences necessary for the knowledge-based society members; it shapes the participantsāattitudes towards innovative and creative subject teaching, encourages them to make the study process active via the application of practical teaching methods.

Research interests of the academic staff in this field of Linguistics are very diverse.
Prof. dr. DanguolÄ MelnikienÄ continued conducting her research into the aspects of bilingual lexicography. The monograph entitled Le dictionnaire bilingue: un miroir dĆ©formant? written by the scholar deals with such lexicographic aspects as consistency and particularity of nomenclature compilation, dictionary bidirection and presentation of the cases of missing equivalents, etc. The researcher has been trying to find an answer to the question whether bilingual dictionaries have always been a reliable mirror to compare and contrast languages. In the articles published in 2012 the scientist deals with the description pecularities of nonconventional lexis and collocations, points out their innovations. In 2012 the 2nd replenished and renewed edition of the Lithuanian ā French Dictionary was published (1st edition appeared in 2006).
In the field of Phonetics Prof. dr. DanutÄ BalÅ”aitytÄ investigates the structure of the stressed vowel formants in the pronunciation of Lithuanians and Russians originated in Lithuania. The researcher has identified the acoustic peculiarities of vowel quality which appear due to the interactions of two phonetic systems in bilingual situations (primary and secondary interference). The scientist also analyses the positions of unstressed vowel formants of the Russian language following the soft consonants in the pronunciation of Lithuanians. Under the basis of her research the professor compares the data obtained to the data of standard pronunciation and emphasizes the influence of the native language.
Prof. dr. D. BalÅ”aitytÄ has also been investigating the status of the Russian language in the headlines and content of the articles written in Russian and infers that rhetoric of such publications is very diverse.
Doc. dr. Liudmila Garbul applies diachronic and synchronic aspects to investigate the influence of interslavic lexical relationship on the lexis of the Russian diplomacy in the first half of the 17th century. According to the researcherās obtained data, the Polish influence on the Russian written language in the first half of the 17th century extended not only in terms of its amount but its quality as well, which led to the close interaction of lexical and semantic systems of the contiguous languages on a deeper level. The latter fact allowed the researcher to talk about the fact that the production of the Posolsky Prikaz (Ambassadorial office) in the second half of the 16thā17th centuries acted not only as one of the main channels of the Polonisation of the Russian language lexis, but due to quite a big amount of semantic borrowings as well as the increasing number of intraslavonic derivates among lexical borrowings in the 17th century it encouraged the extension of the influence of Polish culture in a broader aspect.
Doc. Dr. Carmen Caro Dugo has been translating The Seasons (Metai) by K. Donelaitis into the Spanish language.
Lecturer Anastasija Belovodskaja completed and successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled Internet parody as a linguo-cognitive phenomenon (in the context of contemporary anonymous internet creative work). The aim of her research is to investigate and describe different aspects of internet parody which is represented by multifold (combining both verbal and non-verbal codes) and verbal texts. In the course of the study discourse cognitive characteristics of contemporary anonymous parody were compared to the analogous characteristics of the historic parody variety and means of of expressing parody that are ulterior to the internet space. In the PhD study prototext exponents are defined as cultural signs the sources of which belong to the cultural space that embraces both the creator of a parody and the one perceiving it. By taking such an approach, i.e. by analysing cultural signs and source-spheres they belong to, one can get the idea of the precedented texts as a whole comprising the so-called ācultural baggageā of a particular epoch and of particular society.
A. Belovodskajaās other research interest is foreign language teaching methodology. Findings in this field the researcher discloses in her publications which describe the usage possibilities of blended learning model in āRussian as a Foreign Languageā in conditions of different language skill levels of student groups and limited number of hours to work in the classroom.
Lekt. Alfonso Rascon has been investigating Lithuanian studentsā studying Spanish typical mistakes and his findings revealed in publications.
Asist. RÅ«ta Å iriakovaitÄ published the translation of Literary Letters to a Woman by Gustavo Adolfo BĆ©cquer.
Asist. AistÄ KuÄinskienÄās focus of research is epistolary texts as a particularly special genre of literature and its pecularities which were described in her publications.
